This semester I am facing a biggest difficulty in my Accounting course because the Professor of this course speaks really fast without any pauses, and his voice is deep, no pitch, barely with stress. That is difficult for me to notice what the important part of each his sentence is. Since I am a non-native English speaker and not a good notes taker, it makes the situation harder. I do pay so much attention in every lecture and drop down the notes as much as I can, but I know I still miss some of significant terms he teaches. In addition, at the first lecture, he told us his tests and exams are based on his lectures, not the textbook, so his lecture and textbook are somewhere different, and I cannot just read the textbook instead. Therefore, I try hard to find ways managing not to mess up this course.
Right now, in my Management course, I learn the concept of management process which are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. I know the first thing I need to do in order to manage this difficulty is planning, so I come up two plans. First, I plan to found a study group with several classmates. We can share our notes, discuss the questions we have and study together. I think that might be a great help to my problem. Second, I plan to record his lectures because he already gave us the permission to do so. Recording his lectures may give me an opportunity to listen again, and that help me retake the notes which is missing. Then, for the study group, I will start to organize the study group such as finding classmates who are willing to join the group and become the leader of the group to organize and control ourselves, only discussing about the topics related to our study, not chatting. I hope I can overcome this obstacle.
Your 2 plans is very good. I am also a non-native English speaker, I have hard time in class, too.I think record the lectures for retake notes, and join a study group will very helpful. Once you don't understand certain things, you can ask your classmate immediately. In this way, you will have enough time to understand the stuff you don't get it in class. Thank you for sharing your idea. I would do the same thing as you because I believe your plan will definitely helpful for me to improve my harsh situation in class.
ReplyDeleteI think that your problem is probably a common one. I definitely agree with your two original plans to help you out. Forming a study group is always a good thing to do, and so is using a tape corder. If it is a big lecture hall class, maybe you could ask him if you could switch seats and go to the front? Although you said that the notes he teaches and the text book are not the same, the best thing about accounting is that it is a very regulated subject; It essentially the same world wide. So although the particular subjects he discusses might not be in the textbook exactly as he describes solving them and utilizing them, I bet that on the internet on other schools' websites you could search for notes regarding the subject matter; I did that myself last semester when I did not understand how my teacher was discussing the amortization of loans, and I looked it up online; I was shocked to see how easy the other school's notes made the material. Maybe you could also ask the person that sits next to you in class if you could borrow his or her notes at the end of the class period so you could check to make sure that you have everything you need. Maybe you could even talk to the teacher and ask him if you could borrow his own notes at the end of class to make sure you have all the key points. Good Luck.
ReplyDeleteYour two plans are so great. It is good that you record the lecture but I think you may not have time to watch the video for every class. I think you should pay your best attention to write down the notes. If you want to know if you miss to write down some important points about the lecture, you should share your notes with your classmates. I suggest you should go to tutoring if you have question about accounting.
